Postboxes of S17
Post boxes are recognized as enhancing the appearance of the locality and contributing to the stability of the neighbourhood. Some of the older boxes are listed structures.
On 8 August 2014 Royal Mail announced that some 50,000 of its 115,000 boxes were uneconomical with less than 50 letters collected per day. The closure of tens of thousands of boxes had been considered, and could be legally justified, but instead collections from these boxes would be made as part of the postman's normal delivery round.
But for how long? Here then are the 29 post boxes of Dore, Totley and Bradway all within postcode sector S17 except for the box on Long Line, Dore which is in sector S11.
There are no boxes in our area older than George V (1910-36). Indeed the six boxes in Totley and eight in Bradway are all Elizabeth II (1952-present day). Dore has one George VI (1936-52) pillar box, on Furniss Avenue, five George V boxes and nine Elizabeth II. The George V wallbox on Totley Brook Road, adjacent to the railway footbridge, is actually a replacement for an Elizabeth II one.
